Windows Mobile 6.1 on T-Mobile Dash

I just upgraded my T-Mobile Dash from Windows Mobile 6 to Windows Mobile 6.1. It was not completely straight forward, so I’ve provided some instructions below that you might find helpful. When installing any of these programs, follow prompts on phone/PC (including reboots).

*WARNING: performing these instructions may void your warranty and/or brick your phone (i.e. make it as useful as a brick).
  1. Download SurrealNetworksAppUnlock.cab to PC from http://mobile.surrealnetworks.com/AppUnlockReg.htm
  2. Connect phone via USB cable
  3. Copy SurrealNetworksAppUnlock.cab to phone using ActiveSync/Windows Mobile Device Center
  4. From phone, run SurrealNetworksAppUnlock.cab
  5. Download the RUU_Excalibur_WM61_*.exe to PC from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=374890
  6. Download Tegic eT9 US English.cab to PC from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2074399&postcount=1148
  7. From PC, run RUU_Excalibur_WM61_*.exe
  8. You may have to set up your phone's data connectivity: from your phone, run Connection Startup (Start > All Programs > Accessories; select country and operator)
  9. Setup phone using ActiveSync/Windows Mobile Device Center
  10. Copy Tegic eT9 US English.cab to phone using ActiveSync
  11. From phone, run Tegic eT9 US English.cab
  12. Restart phone

Have you experienced any bugs with Windows Mobile 6.1 on your dash?

Aaron at: 7:54 PM said...

Charlie, no, I haven't experienced any bugs that I can remember. I'd say it feels more stable than 6.0. I can't say it the memory management better or worse, but I've been pretty good about killing tasks and freeing memory (with the free memory utility included in the image). Doing this often after opening multiple programs helps battery life. Please report back with your experiences if you do take this path. Good luck!

I'm having trouble with Activesync and syncing my MS Outlook 2003 with my phone. It just keeps saying Synchronizing, but doesn't end up doing anything.

Any advice?

Aaron at: 9:58 AM said...

Hey, Anonymous...Lots of things could create this issue. If you have a data plan, you don't have to sync w/ Outlook, since it sends and receives updates via your webmail address (assuming your organization provides outlook web access).

At any rate, I'd suggest posting the question to a forum like this one.

also, here's a thread on the subject that might help you. good luck.

Little help please...I can't seem to get this to work. I am using a TM Dash (running WM6).

1. I launch "RUU_Excalibur_WM61_Kavana_080408_WWE.exe" from my desktop and it copies the JumpSPL file to my device.

2. I launch the JumpSPL app (from File Explorer) on my Dash and (after clicking "continue" on the XDA disclaimer splash screen) I get a field looking for a Jump address (defaulted to 0X00000000) and an "ok" box.

3. I press Ok and am asked to identify the SPL file. I navigate to the "USPL" file also written to my device by "RUU_Excalibur_WM61_Kavana_080408_WWE.exe" and select it.

4. The device immediately goes back to the File Explorer window for My Device.

5. I press continue in the DOS window for "RUU_Excalibur_WM61_Kavana_080408_WWE.exe" on my desktop which then launches the updater. I click through to start the update.

6. Once the update starts my TM Dash briefly shows a screen of Red blue and green horizontal bars and then switches to a gray screen with a progress bar in it - matching the progress of the updater app.

7. At about 3%, the updater app abruptly stops telling me that the image file is corrupted and my TM Dash reboots...

Anyone have any idea what's going on (other than I have no idea what I'm doing)?

I would really appreciate any help.

Thanks,

i have tmobile serice would upgrading to this software affect receiving video/pictures on my phone? how about mobile internet?

Aaron at: 3:11 PM said...

no, this shouldn't affect your ability to receive MMS messages or your ability to connect to the internet. personally, i was able to still get on the internet after the upgrade, but i never tested MMS. good luck!

Raven at: 5:31 AM said...

I installed this on my Dash, and it works beautifully. Although, even having installed the T9 keymapping fix, there are still a couple keys that are not mapped correctly, ! and @ being the 2 that annoy me. But other than that small glitch, everything is good. And 6.1 may not be the "next" windows mobile, but it is a pretty large improvement over 6.0. I cannot wait for WM7!

Aaron at: 9:25 AM said...

Raven, that's weird that some of those keys still aren't mapped right. please post a reply if you get that resolved. good luck!

To respond to the one user who posted the following issue" 7. At about 3%, the updater app abruptly stops telling me that the image file is corrupted and my TM Dash reboots"
I had the same problem but ran the SurrealNetworksAppUnlock on the phone and it worked then.

Thanks so much for the instructions. I was able to do this in just minutes. Works great.

Christopher at: 7:54 AM said...

I've installed this on my dash and it works great. Threaded sms is excellent... memory usage is improved... homescreen is clean.
But! Battery now depletes in half a day. I've turned everything off systematically to no avail. Even with all signals off, my battery drains at a record pace. Any thoughts?

Aaron Hursman at: 9:21 AM said...

Christopher, I believe I saw similar battery issues. I changed my email settings not to check for messages as they arrive. Instead, I set this to like every 5-10 mins. That seemed to help. Good luck.

Anonymous at: 3:00 PM said...

the 6.1 software is killing my battery faster than ever. plus my phone shuts off when im on a phone call!!! do you think you can help me??

Aaron Hursman at: 3:13 PM said...

Anonymous, did you see my last comment on battery issues? Basically, I changed my email settings to not check for messages as they arrive. Instead, I set this to like every 5-10 mins. That seemed to help. You may also look at getting a new battery. My phone started shutting off automatically whenever I turned on the Wifi. An unopened OEM battery I found on ebay for < $5 did the trick. FYI, my battery was only about 1 year old before I replaced it. Good luck.

el_ber at: 7:33 PM said...

The battery issue is probably unrelated. There have been many postings of the Dash battery going bad, exactly with the behaviour mentioned above. Getting a new battery is probably the best way to go (e.g. try it with a friend's battery to see if it solves your issues).

I DID THE KAVANA AND HAD A LITTLE TROUBLE, BUT ALL THAT WAS DUE TO MY INEXPERIENCE AND INFANTILE NEED TO HAVE EVERYTHING WORK WITHOUT MY OWN EFFORT. AFTER A NIGHTS SLEEP AND READING THE POSTS I ACTUALLY READ THE STEPS AND FOLLOWED THEM (SOMEBODY WENT THROUGH A LOT OF TROUBLE TO DO THESE STEPS SO PRECISELY CORRECT!) EXACTLY. AND WHAT DO YOU KNOW, THE DARN THING ACTUALLY WORKED! WHEN I DID GET THE INTERNET CONFIGURED AS INSTRUCTED (IT DOES IT ITSELF WITH THE WIZARD DOOHICKY; I SPENT HOURS AND HOURS TRYING TO DO IT MANUALLY!) IT STARTED WORKING. ALBEIT IT IS SLOW. BUT I DID NOTICE THE MORE I USE IT, IT SEEMS TO GET FASTER. THERE ARE AN INCREDIBLE AMOUNT OF NEW FEATURES ON MY PHONE NOW. I FEEL LIKE I HAVE A SUPER COMPUTER IN MY POCKET! I ALSO LOADED SKYFIRE BROWSER AND VIVEO VTAP FOR VIDEO. THE LATTER IS NOT WORKING, BUT I DOUBT I NEED IT NOW SINCE I HAVE FLASH NOW. SKYFIRE IS PRETTY COOL FOR A BROWSER. LAST WORD IS THIS KAVANA APPEARS TO BE THE LICK! JUST DO NOT FORGET TO SHUT DOWN THINGS WITH THE TASK MANAGER OR YOUR BATTERY IS GOING TO CROAK QUICK. THANK YOU EVERYBODY THAT PUT THESE HACKS TOGETHER. THAT IS REAL COOL; ALL THE WAY DOWN TO GETTING MY DASH (EXCALIBUR NOW) TO SYNC WITH MY MACBOOK! I AM WARM AND FUZZY ALL OVER DUE TO YOU ALL!

When I accept the JumpSL part of the batch process, activesyn disconnects and will not reconnect no matter what I do... the next step must have an activesyn connection that is active and will fail if one does not exist... anyone else run into this, how do I deal with this issue?

Drewbai at: 11:28 AM said...

Sorta newbie question. When the instruction say reset. Do you mean hard full reset (to new machine) or just remove the battery and restart? Thanks! I am getting the corrupt image error.

Aaron Hursman at: 8:24 PM said...

Drewbai, by "restart" I mean to restart the operating system (or just power down and power back up).

On my Dash the only major problem I currently experience is the phone 'Powers Out'. Especially when turning the phone on as it goes through the process, just before the screen comes in or shortly after all the sudden the phone is 'off' again. I will pull the battery out and chant and pray, click my heels, dance various occult dances, flash signs, and hold my device up to the heavens, and try and try again and again until the beast turns on and stays on. As soon as I realize the beast is up and running I 'lock' it all in place.

I think the trouble is I enabled the Toggle to do everything. I believe that the Dash Toggle is the root of all evil. No matter what OS version I run, if I enable the Toggle to do anything more than adjust the volume, my phone lets the devil in along with all her minions to make my life terrible and hate Microsoft.

I did experience a rather unusual thing by downloading and running the SKYFIRE BROWSER. SkyFire did not like this 6.1, so I went to 'Remove Program' and restarted the beast. When the beast settled, everything was "HTC". I was like, "Holy Goats!", I got a complete HTC rework of 6.1! Everything was a little different. Then a day or two later I had to turn the phone off (I am in school, and/or the hospital I go to makes us turn off the phone completely in the research areas and cardiac units), and when I turned the beast back on I had a different screen and had to hunt down the pretty little green one again. I lost the weather portion in the process.

I am going to keep tinkering with this little beast. I do like this version of 6.1 a whole lot since it is kind of like NOT Microsoft. Meanwhile I am trying to find a T-Mobile phone that will Sync with my Macbook as I slowly, yet not that slowly transition to not having ANYTHING Microsoft within a 1 Kilometer radius near me for the rest of my miserable Microsoft possessed life. It is Linux, Solaris, OSX for me. And even OSX is starting to get on my nerves! It keeps smelling of Microsoft. So my real outlook is aimed at Solaris. Or I am giving up on technology for good and go back to pen and paper. In those days I actually got work done, and a whole lot faster too I should say. Technology is just a fun way to burn the 750,000 hours of life I was sentenced to at birth. I find the best way to get back at the God of birth is to fry my hours with technology. The rest I waste sleeping.

Other than that, nothing could be better. I am having fun with my beast. How about you? Happy New Years!

Georg

Anonymous, I'm not sure if this officially unlocks the phone (as in allows you to use it on another provider's network). The SurrealNetworksAppUnlock.cab file makes me think it unlocks something, but I'm not exactly sure what. I suggest you post to the thread in the xda developers forum to get a more reliable answer.

Aaron Hursman at: 9:19 AM said...

Nick, you are very welcome. I'm glad you found the instructions useful. Enjoy 6.1!

Aaron Hursman at: 9:22 AM said...

Georg, you said a mouthful! Good luck with your tinkering and ridding your life of everything related to the beast. Personally, I have found such endeavors to be very difficult, but more power to you. Happy New Year!

Aaron Hursman,

Similiar to Raven, everything works beautifully. Although, my W,E,R,A,S,D,F,Z,X,C,V are jacked, or aren't mapped correctly. This is an inconvinient inconvinience. My browisng capability via the wonderful new web features is crippled as the command (alphabets/ keymapping) I select makes no sense. Also everything that require those alphabets I listed above is obselete e.g. can't type a meaningful message etc. I hope you can set me in the right direction to fixing this, thank you mr. Hursman.

I have said some bad things again in my frustration with not wanting to believe all my troubles were a simple battery issue. After hundreds of hours of trying everything else I found out 100% of my trouble (besides my denial it could be something so simple!) is the notorious bad battery with the Dash. Even T-Mobile agreed. So I am sorry for all the bad words prior. The Rose for Dash is Bitchin! It is a dream! Just get a new battery for after the Flash/Process. My Macbook actually exploded from a power surge on the same socket my Dash was plugged into. About the same time I had to replace my Macbook my Dash problems started. Pretty obvious now that I pulled my head out of my ass that it was always the battery. I have to admire the Dash for being alive after surviving a power surge gnarly enough to blow the battery apart (Split the whole back seam spewing a bunch of greasy stuff) on a Solid White Macbook! I am putting the Rose back on my Dash. By the way, T-Mobile has the 6.0 upgrade support now, for those who want to find out for themselves this Rose ROM is far superior to the Stock WM 6.0 for Dash. Thanks you guys for the ROM and hard work; and more thanks for the learning experience. Georg San Diego

Mr. Hursman, thank you for making today my 2nd XMAS! WM6.1 is up and and running like water on my TMO Dash. I ran into the same keyboard issues like everyone else, but some how managed to work them out. There was also the issue of the Dash not being able to read my new 4gb microSD card. Once again patience was the big boss and after swaping the og 2gb for the 4gb 2 or 3 times...Bam! It all fell into place! Somebody get this guy a drink! Excellent Work!

Maps went away after I upgraded to 6.1.

I have a Bluetooth GPS unit I used w/the Dash. When Microsoft put out the latest Live Search client update... my GPS doesn't draw out the new maps as I travel along.... what's up with that? Has anyone else experienced this?

If I revert back to original settings, the maps draw out fine.

Anyone have any clues??

Norman, I'm not sure, but I think there may be a myFavs application you can install after-the-fact. If it exists, someone probably mentioned it in the xda-developers forum. However, I can confirm that it isn't required to take advantage of the myFavs plan.

Thank you guys so much for posting the T-Dash firmware fix.

I almost threw my T Dash into the garbage after upgrading to T-Mobiles 1.22.531.8 firmware upgrade. I Found this post at the last minute and averted 400.00 bucks on a new phone and porting over to ATT. I can’t believe how incompetent T-Mobile is on top of the fact that they wont prorate their 200.00 extortion fee to leave after they kill your phone with crap firmware. T-Mobile tech support makes the US Army look good ! Shame on T-Mobile, they suck beyond belief !

I'm on T-Mobile (US) and set the T-Mobile Data to connect to "The Internet" with an access point of internet2.voicestream.com (I have the full T-Mobile internet plan)

Any ideas?

Have also heard that this is only possible for this rom to be run to update the 1.22.531.4 t mobile rom. Can you try to clarify some of this?

My Dash was DEAD! I killed it and got a G1. The G1 was stolen. I started fiddling with my Dash and finally got it going again! I am so amazed with this little beast! I run the NRGZ28 cooked Rose ROM from XDA Developers. All the experts said my phone was good for nothing more than a paper weight! Now I get to throw a WM 6.5 ROM in it! Boy I love this thing. The G1 sucks by the way. The HTC S621 is far superior, so much more can be done with it reliably. I see a post where Charlie asks if I experienced any bugs with WM 6.1 on my Dash. No. But I have to stay on top of running programs. I constantly shut down all programs that I am not using, or else my battery dies fast. Other than that, I can even blue tooth tether it to my Macbook to use as a 3G modem! Cool. Try that with a G1! If I ever leave for another phone, I might go with the new HTC Snap or HTC S711 Pro. Otherwise I found there are few phone that compare with the HTC S621.

I have a question... I just did this yesterday with a Dash Refurb and it is great... Way better than the T-Mobile ROM.

The only issue I have is that on some computers when I plug in the phone via USB, nothing happens... And before, I got the "T-Mobile Dash" in My Computer... now on my work PC, it works (Vista PC). It says "HTC S260" in My Computer and works.

Aaron Hursman at: 3:42 PM said...

OK278, i'm not sure why you can't see it on your computer. what o/s is the computer running? xp? vista? you might want to try to delete any old Dashes from the activesync list of profiles

OK278 at: 5:34 AM said...

All three PC's are Vista. Odd... How can I delete the activesync profiles?

OK278 at: 5:46 AM said...

I think what is going on is that my PCs are not recognizing the USB of the phone... in the Device Manager on the computer that works, says "S260" under "Portable Devices"... on the PCs it does not work.. the device manager shows nothing under Portable Devices...

OK278 at: 7:21 AM said...

I figured out how to fix it. Go to http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/en-us/help/synchronize/device-center-download.mspx

Download the latest software and run it and it will reconfigure the drivers and should make the phone recognizable on Vista or Win7. Worked for me.

Hi -

I recently did the Kavana 6.1 upgrade on my Unicel/AT&T HTC S621. Everything is working fine except that the phone is constantly running out of memory... Using the Free Memory app doesn't really work, as it will free only a KB or so, and it doesn't show the correct amount of RAM, in any case (usually around 5K instead of the 64K actually ob board). Any ideas?

Thanks,

I can't complete step 8 because my phone does not have "select country and operator" in the accessories folder. I tried skipping step 8 but then I can't execute SPL properly when trying to install windows. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
